New course: Introduction to WinBUGS for ecologists organised by the Institut Català d’Ornitologia

A new course on bayesian approach to regression, ANOVA and related statistical analyses will be held in Barcelona 12-16 december 2011.

The course is organised by the Institut Català d’Ornitologia (ICO) with Marc Kéry (Swiss Ornithological Institute) and Viviana Ruiz- Gutiérrez (Laboratory of Ornithology, Cornell University, USA) as main instructors. The course will be based on the book by Marc Kéry an Introduction to WinBUGS for Ecologists.

Bayesian analyses are increasingly used in biodiversity monitoring and offer an appealing approach to the analyses of temporal data when detectability needs to be taken into account. ICO and ECO-LAND collaborate with the Museu de Granollers in the analyses of monitoring data within the project “Bioindicators of global change from large scale bird and butterfly monitoring programs”. The course on WinBUGS will be part of the activities organised in the context of this project.

Sharing relevant information: eco-land twitter and google reader

The identification of relevant information is a critical task in modern science. This is a process that researchers do at all times during their professional lifes and sharing such relevant, filtered information is a step forward towards better science.

The ECO-LAND lab wants to promote the use of information sharing tools and two of them are currently used and accessible via the ECO-LAND blog.

ECO-LAND twitter account: this account will ofer information on web-pages, news, research groups and spatial data relevant to the activities carried out by our group but potentially to anyone interested on spatial ecology and global change biology.

Ecology journals recently published articles: This is a short-cut to our Google reader’s account. You will find here a selecton of recent (updated almost daily) articles featuring global change or spatial ecology issues.

Feel free to comment on other ways to share relevant science related information!!!

ATLAS OF BIODIVERSITY RISK

The present Atlas of Biodiversity Risk is the first of its kind to describe and summarise in a comprehensive, easy-to-read and richly illustrated form the major pressures, impacts and risks of biodiversity loss at a global level. The main risks identified are caused by global climate and land use change, environmental pollution, loss of pollinators and biological invasions. The impacts and consequences of biodiversity loss are analyzed with a strong focus on socio-economic drivers and their effects on society. The Atlas is divided into sections which mostly deal with particular pressures. It is also based on case studies from a large set of countries, which are completed by introductory and concluding chapters for each section. Three scenarios of potential futures are the baseline for predicting impacts; the scenarios explore options for mitigating adverse effects at several spatio-temporal scales. Elements of these futures are modeled, tested and illustrated.

The Atlas combines the main outcomes of the large European project ALARM (performed by 68 partner organisations from 35 countries in Europe as well as from other continents) with some core results of numerous other research networks.
