Spanish Marine protected areas and species distribution models

An ECOLAND lab work contributes to the large scale establishment of marine protected areas in Spain.

The draft Ministerial Order to declare the Spanish Marine Special Protection Areas (SPAs), including information about its geographical boundaries, the main species present and the basic principles for its management it has been just released by the Spanish government.

 

At the root of the identification of SPAs is the LIFE Project “Important Bird Areas for seabirds (Marine IBAs) in Spain”, promoted by SEO/BirdLife. This projects aimed at using innovative spatial modelling methods to define the sites that meet the necessary conditions to ensure the favourable conservation status of seabirds and migratory birds in Spanish waters.

 

In the framework of this LIFE project, the ECOLAND team coordinated by Dani Villero was involved in developing the species distribution models used in the identification of Marine IBAs. The tasks involved developing seabird habitat models and contributing to shape the overall process of identifying the areas. The main outcomes of the project are available in the book entitled Important Areas for the Conservation of Seabirds in Spain.

Exposició Pública de la proposta de ZEPAs Marines Espanyoles

 

Ja està enllestit l'esborrany de l'Ordre Ministerial per la que es declaren les Zones d'Especial Protecció per a les Aus (ZEPA) Marines d'Espanya, que inclou informació sobre els seus límits geogràfics, les espècies per les que són declarades i els principis bàsics per a la seva gestió. La base per a la identificació de ZEPA Marines ha estat el projecte LIFE “Àrees importants per a les aus (IBA) marines d’Espanya”, promogut per SEO/BirdLife, que defineix i delimita els llocs que compleixen les condicions necessàries per garantir l’estat de conservació favorable de les espècies d’aus marines i migratòries en aigües espanyoles.

 

En el marc d’aquest projecte, l’equip ECOLAND coordinat per Dani Villero va participar en la definició de la metodologia per a la identificació del IBA Marines, amb el desenvolupant models de hàbitat d’ocells marins i contribuint a perfilar el procés general d’identificació dels espais. Les principals aportacions del projecte estan recollides en el llibre titulat Àreas importantes para la conservación de las Aves marinas en España.
