Environmental impact assessment (EIA) of the Segarra-Garrigues channel irrigation project

The Catalan Environmental department has recently published in its official communication body the EIA of the Segarra –Garrigues channel in which measures to allow sustainable use of farmland resources and the conservation of threatened species such as steppe-land birds. The conflict between species conservation and agriculture transformation is old in the area and this document should allow the problems to settle down. 

Together with our calleagues of the Biodiversity and Animal Conservation lab, our group has strongly participated in different ways to the provision of information and methodologies allowing policy decision makers to address concerns expressed by environmental associations and the European comission.

The use of remote sensing images to assess irrigation impact, or the development of species distribution models of key species have been important contributions during the process.

El  Departament de Medi Ambient i Habitatge del Govern Català ha fet públic recentment al DOGC el nou informe d'impacte ambiental del projecte d'irrigació Segarra-Garrigues. En aquest document es plantegen les mesures necessàries per permetre la continuïtat agrícola per les zones en l'àmbit del futur canal i assegurar la conservació d'espècies amenaçades com alguns ocells estèpics. El conflicte entre la conservació d'espècies d'ocells amenaçats i la transformació agrícola ve de llarg i aquest document hauria de contribuir a resoldre una part dels problemes plantejats.

Conjuntament amb el nostres col.legues del Grup de biodiversitat i Conservació Animal, el nostre grup ha participat de manera important i en diferents aspectes en proporcionar informació i noves metodologies amb l'objectiu d'ajudar els agents amb capacitat de decisió a resoldre les problemàtiques plantejades per les associacions de defensa ambiental i la Comissió Europea.

L'ús d'imatges de satèl.lit per avaluar l'impacte real del regadiu, o el desenvolupament de models distribució d'espècies han estat importants contribucions realitzades durant aquest procés.
