Global Index of Vegetation Databases (GIVD)

At the 9th international Meeting on Vegetation Databases (26–28 February 2010, Hamburg, Germany), it was decided to establish a global metadatabase of vegetation data that is publicly available. This initiative has lead to the definition of the Global Index of Vegetation Databases (GIVD). GIVD is a metadatabase, i.e. it contains data about these vegetation-plot databases, e.g. how many relevés from which regions are included, not the data themselves. All databases with temporally and spatially explicit species co-occurrence data of plants for plots up to 2 ha are eligible for GIVD, provided their owners are basically willing to share them with other scientists.

Such a metadatabase shall provide an overview of exiting data, allow researchers to retrieve suitable data for specific research questions, and thus enhance the awareness and application of this valuable but underestimated source of biodiversity information. The metadatabase is managed by the 15 members of a worldwide steering committee. One of these members is our team member Miquel de Cáceres.

Índex Global de bases de dades de vegetació (GIVD)

Sorgit del 9th international Meeting on Vegetation Databases (26–28 Febrer 2010, Hamburg, Alemanya) es decidí d’establir una base de metadades de vegetació que contingués la informació de quines bases de dades de vegetació estan disponibles públicament. Això ha portat a definir el “Global Index of Vegetation Databases” (GIVD).

El GIVD és una base de metadades de vegetació (i.e., conté informació sobre bases de dades de vegetació com el nombre d’inventaris i de quines regions). Les bases de dades de vegetació incloses en aquest index contenen dades de co-ocurrència de plantes en parcel•les (plots) de fins a 2 hectàrees, amb una referència temporal i espacial (geolocalització) explícita. A més, els propietaris de les bases de dades es comprometen a compartir les seves dades amb altres científics.

Aquest index permetrà que estudiosos de la vegetació puguin accedir més facilment a les dades de vegetació per tal de realitzar activitats de recerca o de gestió medioambiental. Es pretén, així millorar la disponibilitat d’aquestes dades de biodiversitat i estimular-ne el seu ús en diverses aplicacions. La base de metadades està gestionada per 15 membres del “steering commitee”, provinents de diferents parts del planeta. Un d'aquests membres és el nostre company Miquel de Cáceres.
